The Team
Erica Remer, MD
A practicing emergency physician for 25 years and physician advisor of a large multi-hospital system turned independent consultant, Dr. Erica Remer is a national expert on documentation, CDI, and ICD-10. She has authored numerous articles and is the co-host of a weekly national podcast, Talk Ten Tuesdays. Remer is the Chair of the American College of Physician Advisors’ CDI Committee, on the Board of Directors of ACPA, and on the National ACEP Coding and Nomenclature Advisory Committee. She is on the Editorial Board of ICD10Monitor and a past member of the ACDIS Advisory Board. Her passion is educating CDI specialists, coders, physician advisors, and healthcare providers with engaging, case-based presentations and the goal of putting MENTATION back into Documentation. Mark S. Schnitzer, MD, FACS, CPHQ, FACHE
Dr. Mark Schnitzer is an experienced Physician Advisor and Medical Director. Before embarking on the transition to non-clinical roles, Dr. Schnitzer practiced neurosurgery in Southern California for 15+ years while cultivating an interest in medical staff governance and responsible stewardship of healthcare resources. Dr. Schnitzer is board certified in healthcare quality and management by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians with added qualification as a Physician Advisor. He is a certified professional in healthcare quality by the National Association for Healthcare Quality. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Schnitzer has provided a number of invited presentations in the areas of healthcare informatics and patient safety and he serves as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
David Rice, MD, MHL
Dr. David Rice is an experienced multi-site healthcare system executive with a background as a system Chief Medical Officer and Chief Physician Executive. His expertise includes successful leadership of quality and safety of care and utilization management improvement initiatives. In addition, Dr. Rice has been instrumental to the development of physician leaders and navigation of hospital and health system governance over the last 10+ years. Prior to transitioning to strategic healthcare leadership roles, Dr. Rice was a practicing Internal Medicine physician for 15+ years. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives in addition to serving as a Board Member of numerous local community, healthcare and educational organizations and committees, including the Chamber of Commerce.
Susanna Harget, RN, MSN
Susanna is a veteran Nurse Care Coordinator with over 35 years of acute care healthcare experience. Since 2000 she has dedicated her nursing career to the advancement of acute case management. During her tenure, she has worked through multiple models of case management, and seen it develop into the Progression of Care Model. An expert communicator, she is known for her leadership in multidisciplinary groups, for her efficiency, and for being a creative problem-solver and positive change agent. Susanna additionally provides education to ancillary disciplines regarding the case management field.
Keli Openshaw, MLS, CPHQ
Keli Openshaw, MLS, CPHQ has almost 25 years of experience in healthcare communication, performance management, and process improvement. She began her career in journalism and transitioned to healthcare marketing, public affairs and physician recruitment where she quickly built her skills in physician relations. In the past decade, she moved into quality and evidence-based practice working with optimizing value-based arrangements and healthcare quality and cost initiatives. Keli has her Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and currently serves as a senior process improvement facilitator. She has project management experience for physician and quality dashboards, ICD-10, orthopedic service lines, hospital throughput, and healthcare organization quality and performance dashboards. On the side, she volunteers for Northern Arizona Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance and Tuba City Humane Society.
Alan Cudney, MBA, MHS, RN-BC, CPHQ, PMP, CSM, FACHE
Alan Cudney is a healthcare performance improvement leader with more than 30 years of expertise in improving the quality and efficiency of care in acute, post-acute, and managed care settings. Mr. Cudney specializes in case management, performance analytics, clinical IT optimization, and population health management. With more than 40 consulting engagements and multiple leadership roles, his work has resulted in multiple success stories and client testimonials. As a recognized thought leader, Mr. Cudney has presented at national and regional conferences and has published many articles, papers, and blogs. He has also contributed to textbooks on clinical informatics and hospital case management and is on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Hospital Administration and Case Management Monthly.
Tina Dufresne, RN, BSN, MSM, CCM
Tina Dufresne, RN, BSN, MSM, CCM is the founder and CEO of Navigate Coaching, LLC. She began her career as a practicing nurse and held several leadership positions in hospital, home health, physician hospital organization (PHO) and consulting settings with a focus on Quality and Case Management programs. She was a Principal Performance Partner with Premier, Inc. and successfully led transformation projects in quality, care management, and clinical documentation improvement in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Her experience in hospital operations, population health operations, case management leadership, healthcare reform, utilization review and strategic planning enables delivery of end-to-end care management solutions..
John Zelem, MD
As an accomplished Corporate Executive and Physician Advisor, John Zelem has experience in Compliance, Regulatory Guidance, Utilization Review, process improvement, and Physician Advisor program development and training. He has a history of successfully analyzing and helping implement best practices for Utilization Review/Management, developing a unique approach to drill down and improve physician documentation for medical necessity with collateral benefit for CDI. Using skills learned in motivational speaking and authorship, John has written for and presented to national, local, and specialty organizations engaging executives and physicians. Linda O’Donnell, RN, BSN, MHA, CMAC
Linda O’Donnell, RN, BSN, MHA, CMAC has over 35 years of nursing experience and is currently the Senior Director of Operations for Care Management and Ambulatory Services at a multi-state large health care system. She formerly served as the Director of Care Management at a large community hospital and tertiary hospital. In her past, she served as an Administrative Director of Senior Services and opened several hospitals based Skilled Nursing Units. Linda has extensive experience in leadership, case management, and utilization review, including implementation of industries best care management models that serve across the care continuum. She has authored several articles and has spoken at national conferences.
